Signing Day... the latest

Signing Day is officially here. We'll update this post as things progress. It's late afternoon now and it seems things have quieted down a bit.

Miami's last big name guy they were waiting on was Deonte Thompson and he committed to Florida within the last hour. Par for the course, the Canes message boards are in meltdown mode... chastising the 18-year old for his decision instead of focusing on the 20 or so new additions to The U. Get your priorities in check, people.

How about what Randy Shannon was able to poach or steal back from Florida? Demarcus Van Dyke signed with Miami this morning, after verballing to the Gators back in December.

The Canes also nabbed Allen Bailey, a linebacker out of Georgia who was down to Miami and Florida and went with The U.

Regarding losing Thompson, it is what it is. Welcome to big time college football recruiting. The Belle Glade, FL product is headed to the home of the current National Champions.

In the end, Thompson proved to be caught up in the recruiting game, promising a "signing day shocker" which he delivered. Thompson had been talking up The U, wearing Miami gear, downplaying Florida, flirting with Southern Cal and in the past few days there were rumors that Florida State entered the big picture.

As of last night, Miami assistant coaches were feeling good about their chances, but as Signing Day approached, that good feeling slipped away. I'm sure more will come out on that later. Right now, it reeks of 2005 when Antone Smith played everyone like a fiddle with his last minute decision to become a Seminole.

While I'd have loved Thompson's skills at The U, I can do without these childish Signing Day hijinx and I believe coach Shannon feels the same way. I can't see him kissing ass or licking boots to get a 17-year old kid to Miami. Here's the game plan, here's his vision, get on board or get out of the way.

More to come as the day progresses, but for now, here's the official list of signees. Welcome to The U, gentlemen:

Daniel Adderley
Allen Bailey
Jared Campbell
Lee Chambers
Kayne Farquharson
Orlando Franklin
Graig Cooper
Harland Gunn
Leonard Hankerson
Tyler Horn
Robert Marve
Jermaine McKenzie
Joseph Nicholson
Adewale Ojomo
Chris Perry
Demarcus Van Dyke
Doug Wiggins

On a side note, one more big, collective "kiss my ass" to ESPN U and their lack of coverage on Signing Day. I swear to the good Lord above that in the 2+ hours I watched their worthless program, I saw absolutely NOTHING on the University of Miami.

I saw Ron Zook and heard all about Illinois. I heard more flip-flopping from Urban Meyer and stroking of the National Champs. I heard about Louisville, Rutgers, USC and a slew of other programs - but nothing on Miami. Nothing on coach Shannon taking over. Nothing on the class the Canes are putting together, the solid recruits they stole last minute from Alabama and Florida or the fact that Shannon has done what he's done coming off a 7-6 season and with only one month on the clock.

The bias continues... but I'll never get used to it or accept it.

What happened to LeSean McCoy? I know he is from 2006 but what happened?

McCoy backed off his verbal to Miami months ago and ended up signing with Pitt today.

Many are saying Miami did just fine landing Graig Cooper, though. Both Cooper and McCoy were at Milford Prep together and Cooper looked to be the better back, sending McCoy to the bench.

What a great class put together in a short amount of time! I like the guys we got this year and look forward to the bright future at The U. We'll surprise people and as far as the media, F them. W'll win games and force them to acknowledge us. Of course even when they do, they'll bring up the negative in the past, but oh well. As long as we win, we can shove it up their asss. We have a great class and difference-makers across the board.

I was willing to let DT go to FSU but for him to go to Florida really irks me. Florida State and Miami have produced far more capable and compotent NFL recievers, yet he feels his future is served in Urban Meyer gimmick filled offense. Like the Spurrier years these guys will fall flat on their faces when they make the NFL. Perhaps it is just that Florida bothers me so much more than FSU. When we lose to FSU their fans for the most part are classy- a healthy respect exists even if we do want to kill each other, but with Florida it's nothing but trash talking and classless smears towards the other two schools in the state. I am growing to detest them more and more every day. Why couldn't that South Carolina guy had made the kick or the FSU guy kept his pinky inbounds? Things would be so different.

Welcome to all the new Canes. Scout.com ranked us 13th at the end of the day, I'll take it, that was a great job by coach Shannon in a short amount of time. The whole coaching staff deserves a great amount of credit. Now lets develop these kids into great student athletes. Go CANES!
DOC in Cali. from the 323 to the 305!

First of all, I would like to say to the new recruits, "Welcome to The U" glad you have made the decision to attend school as well as play football. Also, congrats to Coach Shannon and his staff for doing such a great job and giving all of us canes fans a renewed outlook to this seasons and others to come. Canes faithful from all over are excited and ready to roll. Canes305, I also saw that worthless piece of ESPNU signing day coverage crap that was on and I expected nothing more of them because if it isn't negative they will not talk about "The U". So this really give even more assurance that Miami did great this year and better than expected about the outsiders. Signing day is offically over and now it time for "The Empire to stike back" (a little Star Wars humor) 2007 baby, 2007!

Big A from the 321 to the 305!!!!

All Canes,

You are right in your statement about Deonte Thompson. If he doesn't want to be a cane then so be it. Focus on the great class of atheletes Coach Shannon has brought in. I am particularly excited in Allen Bailey. The kid is a beautifully looking athlete and I'm extatic to see what he can do on the field for the canes.

How do I get on as a blogger to Allcanes?????????

All the ESPN writers must have worked for Sports Illustrated. They just can't stand the U. But ESPN management must love the number of viewers that watch the Canes because ESPN has the Canes on TV virtually every week.

I agree with ESPNU's coverage on signing day. Luckily I recorded all 7+ hours of the program and FF to the 2 minutes they talked about UM. In case you missed it, they talked about the Bailey signing and about Robert Marve. They also showed a few clips of Marve in some high school games. That was all I saw on UM in 7 hours. While FF I saw more shit on Florida and USC then ANY other school.

I was watching ESPN, and there was a mention or two on the U. However, it was about the 'brawl'. They showed it a few times actually, and mentioned how it would hurt us on signing day.
So much for that propaganda.

Who cares about respect? We have never been respected. I had someone @ my Superbowl party say that the 90's era Seminoles had the greatest dynasty in NCAA history. This made me laugh out loud!
FSU 2 titles in 10 years 93,99
UM 4 titles in 10 years 83,87,89,91
then one for the thumb in 01
I wont get in to the top 10 finishes because I dont have the info but it comes down to exactlly that, finnishing.
in the end the lack of respect will make us stronger, hungrier and more focoused.
