U feeling Randy yet?
Twelve games into the Tim Walton era, the plug has been pulled.I love it.
No disrespect to Walton. He gave The U his all these past four seasons. Heading to Coral Gables in 2004, taking over for the recently departed Mark Stoops, Walton assumed the role of defensive coordinator and helped mold some Hurricane superstars.
Year four, the promotion to defensive coordinator and a full on face plant. 51 points given up game two at Oklahoma. A 27-0 halftime deficit weeks later at lowly North Carolina. 48 points surrendered in the Orange Bowl finale in a shutout against Virginia. 44 more a week later in a loss at Virginia Tech.
Even more insulting, the way Miami was getting worked by the opposition. True, there was a lack of depth and the playmakers weren't what they have been in years passed. But the inability to make changes on the fly and to adjust to what was coming the Canes way - that's what did Walton in and forced the hand of Randy Shannon.
Even though this defense took a huge step back, losing Brandon Meriweather, Jon Beason, Kareem Brown, Baraka Atkins and Bryan Pata, Walton was let go for not being able to do more with what he did have.
A 5-7 season is unacceptable at Miami. As is the trend of steadily declining year after year. This fan base is starved for something successful and is temporarily content with any step that seems to be in the right direction. Hurricanes abroad have turned their sights towards the future, hanging on every word that comes out of a 17-year old recruit's mouth.
That being said, this is a thin-skinned and damaged fan base right now. Nothing is good enough. The sky is always falling. Every decision is being second-guessed. Armchair quarterbacks abroad have a million and one opinions regarding the handling of situations; most emotionally-fueled and lacking any sense of logic.
Welcome to Miami Hurricanes football after only winning 13 of the past 28 games.
I do my best to remain cautiously optimistic regarding the present and future of the program. I try to see the sliver lining and do my best to call out the wrongs while also praising what's done right. I focus on the long-term goal and the end result. I worry less about what's said, judging the efforts - and more importantly, the results.
Shannon deserves a ton of praise for ending this Walton experiment here and now. End of story. I keep reading nonsense about double talk or criticism regarding Walton even being promoted in the first place.
Unreal.
Shannon took a chance on a third year coordinator. It didn't work and that era has since come to an end. For a guy who takes a lot of grief for being stubborn and stuck in his ways, Shannon sure as hell shed that stigma this week. Not many first year coaches are canning their first year defensive coordinator after one season. Shannon did.
I don't care what he mumbled in the wake of the Boston College loss. Stability. Talk of keeping the staff in tact. Commenting that some guys might leave voluntarily, yet three weeks later letting his defensive coordinator go.
Randy Shannon is guilty of a little bit of coachspeak here and again I say, so what. Do you want to dwell on the process or focus on the end result? Walton was proving to be a liability and now he's gone.
Miami coaches hit the recruiting trail hours after the season-ending, 28-14 loss at Boston College. This staff went the separate ways, focusing on their particular recruits and getting a head start on the rebuilding that starts with the 2008 class.
There is one job for every Miami coach right now; locking down their verbal commitments and swaying some last minute, on the fence kids. Nothing more, nothing less. It's not about appeasing a loudmouthed, opinionated, jump-to-conclusions, sensationalized sports media community.
The last thing Miami needed these past three weeks were any more distractions. Northwestern and Booker T. Washington were playing their final few games. Big time recruits like Arthur Brown were set to announce their intentions mid-December. Other bowl-bound programs are gearing up for their post-season while Miami coaches were doing all they could to ensure they see a post-season in 2008.
Ask yourselves, was three weeks ago really the time to pull the plug on Walton? Should that have been the first move made after the season ended? Did it not make more sense to stay the course, focus on recruiting and when things mellowed then address the situation?
The more illogical reactions I see, the more I realize each and every member of this fan base has their own way of dealing with the now. Everyone sees the program in their own separate way. You have you bleeding hearts on one end and the harshest critics on the other. Some folks are logical, some react solely on emotion and others change their opinions every hour on the hour.
Things have been down so long right now, most don't even realize which way is up. People have forgotten how to get excited and are so numb right now they refuse to let themselves feel anything good when the program takes a positive step in the right direction.
Walton gets fired, a new defensive coordinator will be in place next year - yet some want to focus on a media comment from three weeks ago and what was said instead of what was done.
I look at the current state of the program and I'm finding myself "realistically optimistic". Miami is still a few years away from being a major player again, but I'm seeing some building blocks being laid. The foundation is being poured. There's a formula and Shannon is following it to a T.
I've said it in the past, championship caliber teams aren't made or born . They're grown from the ground up. Seeds are being planted. They'll be nurtured, brought along and soon enough there will be a plentiful harvest. Do it the right way, with the right caliber of players and you'll reap the rewards.
Believe it or not, it's a great time to be a Cane. 2007 was rock bottom. The kick in the shorts comes in the fact most of us believed 2006 was the low point. We wanted instant results year one of The Shannon Era. We refused to acknowledge how low everything sunk this past half decade. That denial made this year's 5-7 campaign sting even more.
The phoenix hasn't risen from the ashes yet, but we're seeing some movement. Slowly but surely. One small achievement at a time. This week it was the addition of Arthur Brown and the departure of Tim Walton - not to mention seeing our Northwestern and Booker T. Washington recruits winning their championship games and building upon their legacies.
Next up, the hiring of a new defensive coordinator and the red carpet being rolled out for some early enrollees as they start their collegiate careers. Six weeks later, Signing Day and what should be a top three class in the nation.
Not to mention an undefeated basketball team who just cracked the top 25 for the first time in five years.
Cheer up, people. Can the doom and gloom for now. Christmas was around the corner and we just got a few early presents this week. Times are a-changing. Enjoy these little moments. As we've learned before, the ride itself is as important as reaching your destination.
After spending the past five years wandering the desert, take solace in knowing Miami is at least pointed in the right direction and is walking towards the Promised Land.

305,
Sorry to be a party pooper but I simply am not buying any of this yet. We've had plenty of good defensive recruits in the late Coker era and they failed miserably. Rhyan Anderson, Willie Williams, ete, etc The only recent recruits who really panned out were the two going pro now- Kenny Phillips and Calais Campbell.
This team lacks talent and worse the bite in big games to win. Miami wasn't always the most talented team but we were the team that wanted to win more than anyone else. We were the team that had a chip on our shoulder on the road something Shannon's team this year totally lacked. People can continue to blame Larry Coker but the gameday preparation by this staff was worse than under Coker. Our guys simply quit when they faced adversity against anyone other than FSU who is an equally pitiful team. One recruiting class and a minor coaching shakeup won't change the mentality here unless the Head Coach himself changes his demeanor and attitude.
Great blog....and I wanted to write and say how happy I am to see that Sean was voted into the Pro Bowl. Classy move fans, players and coaches !!!

Anderson was never the recruit Brown was and WW was a trouble maker out the gate.
DJ Williams was a big time recruit and he lived up to the hype. So did a guy like Dan Morgan.
Again, it's how you choose to look at it. Brown and many of the 26 commitments we have look like the 'real deal'. If you want to reserve judgement, that's on you. After a 5-7 season and little to cheer for, I'll believe the hype and will get excited regarding some of these kids Randy's bringing in.

I think you're sort of answering your own gripe here. Coker's kids didn't have that bite. Shannon is attempting to recruit kids who do. The Northwestern kids and Booker T kids don't strike me as quitters. It the same way the NFL was poaching kids from The U who were part of the 34-game win streak and were on a championship team. They had that winner's mentality and it still shows today.
This staff wasn't "worse' than Coker this year. Please. They made some mistakes, but I saw more throws on first down, going for it on 4th down, a fake FG at Tally and a slew of other plays Coker never would've had the balls to run.
Had Coker stuck around in 2007, this team might've been 3-9.
The biggest issue here is that most of us went into 2007 thinking that 2006 was rock bottom and a change in coaches would turn things around on a dime. Not the case. Miami was still slipping last year.
Why did we 'expect' to be better in 2007? You're talking about an offense who lost Greg Olsen and a defense that lost Kareem Brown, Bryan Pata, Jon Beason, Baraka Atkins and Brandon Meriweather.
That's three first round draft picks.
Lose that talent on defense, have no one ready to step in and replace them and it's pretty tough to blame the current staff for 5-7.
The staff was horrible this year- worse than Coker's staff on offense. No imagination, no willingness to sprint Freeman out of the pocket way too many throws on first down etc. But dumping Walton is a step in the right direction. Now let's hope Nix is next.
Walton is gone now, so the big question is who's going to be the Defensive coordinator? my bet is RS takes to the D play calling again.
DOC in Cali
Dawg- Nix needs another year maybe two IMHO. I agree in the fact that we had waaaaay too many passes on first down when throwing the ball isn't our strength and shouldn't be our strength. But I think until Coop got injured (which I blame on Shannon BTW, giving him carries when we were down 41-0 in a game and only something bad could happen) he had a decent mix of plays to get all the backs involved.
I am in the minority but I believe if we have any chance to get back to or near the top it is going to be as a power running team. We have the backs right now- Baby J, Coop, McNeal, D. Thomas for one more season to make it happen. Now the line has to come along and the D has to make stops when we get back into games as we did three times this year only to see the D collapse after we narrowed the gap. (vs UNC, GT and VT).
As far as Walton is concerned he didn't make any adjustments during the game and Shannon is proving he wants to shake things up- good move canning him.
No matter what Shannon said three weeks ago, he is entitled to change his mind or make a real move later on. He is doing whatever he feels is in the best interest of THE PROGRAM. It doesn't matter what you or I think. He is in it and is at least willing to make change early on. We are getting some nice recruits and working on much needed depth right now, as well as getting the right coaches in the right spots. This is what needs to be done to rebuild this team. We are not top tier right now, but we're not that far from still being a dangerous, good team. Aside from the OU and Tech games, we could have easily won all the others in my opinion. Attitude adjustment is another must needed item to be addressed next and I think that will be done. This team needs to be more mentally tough and have the confidence to pull out the tough wins again. We can get there and I have faith in Shannon.

"We've had plenty of good defensive recruits in the late Coker era and they failed miserably."
Then you went on to mention "Rhyan Anderson, Willie Williams".
"GOOD" defensive recruits turn in to "GOOD" defensive players,,,,, in my humble opinion.
The rest roll a spleef or become an obnoxious, pain in the ass,,,, prick,,,, or worse,,,, BOTH.
Not sure you made a point.
Let's see where this "demeaner" you refer to leads us.
Personally, I didn't think that RS was gonna make caviar from eggshells in one year,,, did you?
Seriously????
Great move, Randy. By the way,who becomes the new AD after Paul Dee?
Remember it was Dee who gave Coker the stupid extension on his contract. I'm excited about the future big time! Fire up!
As a life time "TRUE" canes fan, I am excited about the next couple of years. Its going to take some time to get the U attitude back into our kids.I beleive RS is one of the only guys knows how to bring it back to our program.Patience and faith.
I'm not feeling Randy at all. Poor coaching decisions which cost us several games tell me that while he maybe some sort of super star recruiter he's a horrible manager of the same talent and a poor gameday coach. Really poor.
I can point to several times prior to 2006 where Coker outcoached the opposition. Other than against the pathetic Mickey Andrews and Chuck Amato I can think of no such occasion with Shannon.
Shannon better out recruit everyone because he outcoach hardly anyone, and thus we at the "U" could be in for a long several season.
I know this doesn't have much to do with the D, but since we're talking about coordinators/coaches..
There have been rumors and talks about the return of Kehoe.
That got me excited.
Kehoe isn't coming back. Trust me on that one. He may be somewhere close potentially but he won't be back at UM until some individuals currently on the staff are gone.
Anyhow, I can't help but mention that I think the move to Dolphin Stadium had a great deal to do with our upsurge in recruiting. I've heard through the grapevine our stadium being an NFL facility is almost serving as a tie breaker in our favor. I loved to OB but as I've pointed out on my website Miami has major institutional disadvantages that lead to me to believe that we are never going to be a dominant program again, and unlike most of you I don't solely blame Larry Coker for our demise. I don't believe we can ever be dominant again but we can compete for ACC titles and the occasional national title if the chips fall right and honestly, DS is helping that happen more than the OB would have.
If this years squad had a competent QB, we would have won at least 8 games.
Nix is fine. He needs some tools....like an offensive line and a QB.
Not minor issues.
