Miami 52, Charleston Southern 7

It was only Charleston Southern. A team like Miami is supposed to unload a 45-point beatdown and shut down a team of that nature. Don't get excited over this 52-7 win. Nothing to see here.

That's what the critics will say Friday morning after the Miami Hurricanes made an opening game statement at their new home, Dolphin Stadium.

But for a program coming off of 5-7, winless since last October and curious to see how their youth movement would respond, courtesy of a top-ranked recruiting class hauled in last February - fans of The U can breathe a little bit easier this morning. The resurgence is officially on.

The Canes have their work cut out for them, but the foundation has been laid. Playmakers are returning - and will continue to do so, with another top class expected in 2009. Randy Shannon is bringing in his kids, his coaches and has a game plan regarding getting The U back on the map.

Not too much to break down regarding Xs and Os, so let's keep this one to some random thoughts about opening weekend, the move to a new home and the influx of first-year talent:

Miami had 18 true freshman on the field last night, which is incredible. Shannon has oft stated that the young kids were going to see the field - and they did, making an impact on both sides of the ball. The recent trend at Miami, in the pre-Shannon era, was based on seniority. No mas. The best players will play and battles are won on the practice field, just as they were when Shannon was a player at The U.

It might not seem like all that much right now, but come 2010 when this year's freshman class are juniors, the Canes will be as talent-heavy then as they were the earlier part of this decade. Depth is being built and when these kids have some experience under their belts, look out.

Jacory Harris proved he's a superstar in the making. 190 passing yards was the most by a true freshman quarterback since Ken Dorsey did it against Rutgers in 1999, throwing for 194 yards.

Harris' decision-making is oh-so-refreshing. Knowing when to run versus throw. Spreading the ball around (11 different receivers got touches). Getting rid of the ball when the pressure is on. Poise. Composure. Great touch. Harris is the real deal and over time, will develop into something special...

.... that said, Harris is still green and is not ready to start. As good as Harris looked at times last night, you still have to believe that Robert Marve is going to be even better after a year on the scout team, learning the playbook and working with his teammates. Both he and Harris appear to have the 'it' factor, but Marve's extra year at the collegiate level is the biggest difference-maker here.

Here's hoping the critics don't create an unnecessary quarterback controversy after next weekend. Harris looked pretty darn good picking apart lowly Charleston Southern, whereas Marve is being baptized by fire in The Swamp.

Harris shouldn't be judged for pounding a nobody the same way Marve shouldn't if a somebody pounds him. He was named starter for a reason and deserves a handful of games to prove his mettle.

Javarris James looked solid and healthy - besides the fumble. Graig Cooper appeared bigger and with an extra gear and Shawnbrey McNeal separated himself from the rest of the back ups, though Derron Thomas looked capable against a lesser opponent.

Miami's ground attack will take a huge load off both quarterbacks, if they - and their offensive line - can remain healthy.

Reggie Youngblood was out for last night's contest and back up Chris Rutledge left with an undisclosed injury. The Canes o-line looks competent regarding the first string, but depth is an issue and season-ending injuries will definitely take their toll. The line needs to jell and grow this year and can't afford any steps back.

Travis Benjamin and Thearon Collier are a welcomed site. Miami's bread and butter has always been having some fast, shifty and elusive flanker-type playmakers -- be it Randall Hill, Jonathan Harris, Santana Moss or Roscoe Parrish.

Benjamin and Collier are going to have an immediate impact on the offense, as well as special teams. Between the newbies and Cooper's skills as a punt returner (the 66-yard return for a score was a sight for sore eyes), the Canes are going to start winning the field position battles they've been losing the past few years.

Sean Spence is the real deal. All the online chatter and experts predicted he'd have the biggest impact of this freshman class, and in this case they may be right. Though a bit undersized, Spence has a knack for getting to the football and making plays and seems fundamentally more sound than some Miami veteran linebackers.

Amazing how much is pure instinct and talent, versus what is taught. Without naming names, safe to say some upperclassmen are going to have to step up their game or risk losing out to the youth movement. Will competition bring out the beast in some older Canes, or will talented underclassmen continue to play above their age and experience level? An interesting scenario to keep an eye on this season.

Spencer Adkins was a forgotten man in Tim Walton's defensive schemes, yet found a way to do more game one than he did all last season. Adkins registered two sacks and found some time at defensive end - a position he played in high school, though he's only played linebacker at Miami - until last night. Great moves, great speed and a nose for getting to the quarterback as a pass rusher.

Adkins is part of a few special defensive packages and it seems new defensive coordinator Bill Young is going to find a way to make some 'tweeners' and non-factors into role players for special situations. No mystery why Young was able to find success at Kansas, with lesser athletes.

I am ever-so-curious to see what Young has up his sleeve for Florida. You have to think last night's game plan was ridiculously watered down, knowing who the foe was and who's on deck.

Though it was only Charleston Southern and game one, Miami appears to have some bounce in their step. Granted, I don't feel chest bumps are necessary after every play - I welcome the enthusiasm and the energy that's been missing. Older players seem to have their heads on straighter, while younger players from successful programs are used to winning ways and have carried over the tradition from their high school programs.

Of course the real test will be seeing how Miami reacts in crunch time or after a loss. Easy to have that 'feel good' mentality when you're rolling en route to 52-7. What happens if the wheels come off a bit next week a la Oklahoma 2007? Does this team have the grit to keep fighting? Can they rebound at Texas A&M after a bye week?

Whatever high these Canes are on, it needs to continue win or lose this season. Their collective attitude and demeanor were solid last night. Keep it up.

Patrick Nix did a good job last night and I like seeing him down on the sidelines, instead of up in the booth. Get knee-deep in the action. Have a feel for what the offensive players are going up against. Sense what's working and what isn't. Nix finally has some playmakers and can prove if he has the 'it' factor, or if Miami will be looking for their fifth offensive coordinator in as many seasons.

While it may have only been a lowly non-BCS opponent, I would think the fan base feels much better about 52-7 in 2008 than 31-3 against Marshall in 2007. Kirby Freeman looked lost in last year's season opener -- much like he did opening Baylor's season with a 4-of-11 performance and INT before getting yanked. Defensively, the Canes hung in there against the Thundering Herd, but didn't dominate any aspect of the contest.

There will be some rough patches this year, but as far as opening games go - there were many more positives to be taken in 2008's opener than 2007.

Last but not least.... Dolphin Stadium. I've read the complaints online and talked to buds at the game who said the bitch-fest started outside before fans even entered the stadium.

The move to a new venue cannot and should no be judged after one game. Especially a Thursday night contest against a lowly opponent. Next time the Canes take the field, they'll have three games under their belt, the U will be midfield and striping will be in the endzones. With the Marlins' season most likely over, the infield should be covered up and the overall aura will be better.

Not to mention the next two home games are North Carolina and Florida State, back-to-back.

Dolphin Stadium will NEVER replace the Orange Bowl. That's like asking your stepdad to replace your real dad. Impossible. But that doesn't mean ol' "uncle dad" can't bring something to the table as well, making for a positive life experience.

The Canes need to build a new tradition - and that takes more than a game. Hell, it could take at least half a decade before it even starts to feel like home. Miami needs to win some big games there. A few thrilling comebacks. Some big plays taking place in certain parts of the field, making them indelible in your memory.

You could look around the OB any given Saturday and remember a litany of big time plays that went down here, there and everywhere.

Give it time to come together... and in the meantime, appreciate the new aesthetics and the feel of a first-class venue. Also, remember how much the players love it - as many were raving about the Jumbotron and locker rooms after the game.

As fans, we may miss the tradition - but you have to remember most of these current Canes were zygotes when Miami was a force in the late 80s/early 90s. Facilities and an NFL stadium matter to future recruits and if a move to Dolphin Stadium is something the kids love, then us crotchety old fans need to get on board with the youth movement.

All Canes,

Awesome performance from what I've dubbed 'Freshmen U' tonight. I think the 'Canes looked like more of team tonight then they have in the past two years and my excitement for this season is at an all-time high. I was wondering though, I remember reading a post a few weeks back about the new AD saying that the split U would be in the middle of the 50 yard line in Dolphin Stadium. While I think they did an awesome job with the Ring of Honor and whatnot around the stadium, I noticed the U wasn't present, nor any end zone logos or ACC logos. Are they coming after the baseball diamond is dug up? Or has Dolphin Stadium decided against changing the field for the Canes?

What I saw of the game I was impressed. it was a refreshing change to see a QB that could move and still throw the ball well and to have receivers wanting to catch the ball.

GLAD is CANES season again...

I had issues all night with ESPN360 being very choppy.

I know...It was Charleston Southern, but still...52 points...
We haven't scored that many points since the Duke game in '05. (Same score too 52-7) We didn't even score in the 40's last year...

It was exciting to hear (no TV) them learn to walk and talk like new babies last night with what..24 freshmen getting playing time (that'll further recruiting too)...and stepping into one of our Hostile homes away from home next week will teach them more, but...a win is a win and the experience helps...

Of course I did not see the game- only a few highlights on ESPN. I am still elated to put 52 points on the board. I don't care who it is against. I honestly don't think we would have scored that many points last year even against this same team. Kudos to the team for taking care of business, and handling a team you are supposed to handle. This is a new year and anything can happen for this team. Keep it rollin'.

In spite of the competition, last years team would have had three interceptions in the first quarter, then Nix would not have put the ball in the air again. GS would have gone to a nine man front & our line & running backs would have gotten all nicked up for the remainder of the season!!!

There was poise at QB positoin. When there was no play, he threw it away or ran. A couple of times when he started running, he kept looking for someone to throw to. He never gave up on routes even when they took a while to develop!!! His name is "ICE"!!!

The defense gave me some scares, but I realize they went total vanilla, not showing alot of blitz packages, and wqe rotated alooooooot of players in & out of the game.

I feel like we can get 7 wins out of this team, secure a mid level bowl game, & get the #1 recruiting class again.

Canephin is dead on. The U will be there once the Marlins season is over, courtesy of a transplantable section of turf that will be brought in and out for the Canes games. Last I heard the end zones will be old school diagonal stripes and the ACC logos were there but they are actually not allowing them on the field so they are on the sidelines. So much for them doing "everything possible to make this the Canes home".

I was there for the game and overall they looked pretty solid. The general feeling among my friends was that the O-line is a little questionable though. Passable against Charleston Southern but they could have trouble opening holes for the backs against better teams. I was surprised to see them put Cannon in, I guess they aren't planning on red-shirting any of the QB's? I was also happy to see the D getting their hands on the ball several times in the game. Hopefully heading back to the days where we could count on some big forced turnovers.

Next week we'll get a better idea of where the team is at.

Wait a minute, if harris has all the tools to lead this team why not let start? just cuz he is a true freshman dosn't mean he cant play right now...saying that and shannon belief that the best man wins in practice then let the competetion began; we need to win by no means.

A win is a win indeed, just ask Michigan (ala App State). Anyway, there isn't much difference between a Charleston and say FIU. Last years team (23-9 W) didn't even come close to putting up 52 points on FIU in '07. And as some player(s) noted, like 40% of Charleston players come from Florida. So while the jersey states CSU, the talent is pretty much FL kids. So even though they’re a lesser foe, they’ve got a little talent.

Still, it doesn't mean anything other than we played a tune up game and handled it like a tune up game. That's a good thing/sign. Next week let's play a 'top 5' game as such and handle it, win or loss, as such. That to me will speak volumes about the state of this team. How they handle adversity and a pending loss to a more experienced (not better :D) opponent. GO CANES!!! Play loose like Charleston; after all you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Well, im excited to see what this team could do. Before the game i was telling my buddies that for me to feel confident about this season, we would need to post a score like the one we did. Again, it is only CSU, but compare this to last yrs opener and you feel pretty good about the team. Like Canes305 was saying, Harris is a star in the making and im thrilled with the kid. Check out his interview over at MiamiHerald.Com and he has a GREAT line. He was asked on where he goes aftet this game being that he knows Marve is the starter and Jacory says this:

" I understand everything Coach Shannon talks about, he's a great coach and WHATEVER HE SAYS, GOES."

Im sorry, but that is the single greatest thing iv heard any of our Canes say. These guys just get it. Pay attention to Randy and youll find success.

Im excited about the season,i think well turn some heads and we'll deff make strides. Bring on UF.

The competition began in spring, ended in fall and Marve got the nod. End of story.

As expected, the fans are now trying to sum up the quarterback battle based on one performance by Harris - with Marve on the bench. Forget the fact that the coaches spent the past six month summing up their performances in practice and doing the pros vs. cons regarding who should start.

As I said before, Harris shouldn't be judged by a solid performance against Charleston Southern, the same way Marve shouldn't be judged if he doesn't have a stellar outing at Florida.

Harris was solid last night, but let's not forget some of the less than great plays - not to mention the Sisters Of The Poor opponent on the other side of the ball.

I agree with allCanes. I think what i was saying about Harris was takin a tad too far. Im thrilled about what Harris CAN and will do for this team. I LOVE his attitude. Marve was named the starter by Coach S and i trust he's made the right choice. Seeing Harris just gets you excited for ALL of these new faces. I just love Harris' attitude, same goes for the rest of these new guys.

Zygotes ??? lmao I love it.

Hopefully we can give them HAPLOID rat-bastus from GAYnesville something to remember come Saturday.

Knowing how I feel about the "MARVE-lous" one from hereabouts, thanks for the preventive medicine regarding outside judgements at this early date on who the quarterback should be. There is indeed, a reason that Marve has been named the starter. That being said, we need the O-line and running backs to help take the pressure off whichever young QB is on the field in order to have any sucess at all.

Stupid damn rearview mirror,,,,,,,,,,, ?:-)

GO CANES,,,,,, BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!

Just think, we saw a true freshman (Harris) do what he was coached to do. With the talent he displayed, & the coaches, after working the quarterbacks through spring & off season workouts say he is the 2nd best of the two, can you imagine what Marve must look like?

All I can say is, we have the personal to manage the game at the QB position. This will make the defense better because they will have a little time to rest, get coached up on the sideline, look at pictures of formations from the booth, then go back in.

Last year it was alot of three & out or two & an interception. No time to get coached, water, or nothing else. This position is key.

I watched part of the Fl vs Hawaii game, & that O line for FL caught fits protecting Tebow. If we can generate that kind of pressure next week, I'm going in thinking we can pull one off!!!

If you did not watch it, don't tell me it's not possible! Hawaii's front 7 gave the gators HELL all DAY!!!

Maybe they were trying to not show much & plan to shore it up this week, but from what I saw, the front 7 should put enough pressure on to force bad desicions from Tebow!

From those of you who did watch(FL vs Hawaii) talk back to me.

I loved what I saw, but I think the 14 freshmen will play like 14 freshmen sometime next week.

I love my Canes and I think we can beat UF with all of the raw talent they have. Its just a huge learning curve.

Obvious upside to them: HUGE POTENTIAL which makes my feet start tappin' =]

Maybe so, nevertheless the importance to undestand Harris played a college game and played it well: not many mistakes, having confidence, and have a psychological demenor to also lead the team! But the importance is to believe in BOTH QB's wining this yr!It may b true that Marve won this summer's practice but the importance is to WIN with Both QB's and show the nation that DA U is back!

What do you think of these UF quotes and are you planning to address them?

Louis Murphy:
"At the time I was coming out, they were loaded," Murphy said. "They were actually good then. I wanted to go there and be a part of that receiving crew. They didn't want me. But now we have the best receiving crew here now. Right now, it's fueling me inside."

Murphy even took a shot at Miami's moniker.

"If I'm right, the 'U' stands for the University of Miami. Well, we're the University of Florida. We're the 'U.' I don't refer to them as the 'U.' I refer to them as Miami. If the 'U' is for university and winning and championships, we're the 'U.' They are Miami, and that's what I call them."
Tim Tebow:
Tebow said he wasn’t impressed with fan support in the Orange Bowl when he visited Miami.

“I’m huge into the college environment and the excitement of the fans and everything,” Tebow said. “After watching a game there . . . I was looking around and there were like 30,000 empty seats. And then you come to Florida and you see the environment, wow, big difference.”
There was also a quote about Urban planning to run up the score for recruiting purposes.

Well observed, 305.

The ACC... is wide open. I'm very, cautiously, excited for this team. I can see two years from now the U being a multi-faceted monster with very few loose teeth, & a history of winning that may very well start with our classic stamp of "go ahead, forget us (insert top-tier program), you'll have the rest of your season to remember who we are" this weekend. We'll get to split those gums, & I honestly like our odds in this shadow of a major conference.

The national media has forgotten us. With so harsh a spotlight on the pathetic state of the ACC, Miami got repeatedly & blatantly omitted on countless analyst rundowns & assessments. Whatever, irked me at first, but I like being forgotten. Means we can just play football. No clouds of hype in the air.

Florida is good. We can play four quarters with them. I'll take that as a start. Go freaking CANES.

All great read above. Very well said.

My only disappointment about dolphin stadium
was the first time in as long as I remember going to the OB this never happened. My mother's huge Ibis magnets were stolen off her Jeep Cherokee. We went into all canes the day after the game to buy some goods and seems to have happened to others at the game.

It was also a complete nightmare trying to leave the stadium. they are real quick to take the parking money but its every man for themselves upon exit.

You're getting me too excited! Take it down a notch, please. Couldn't have said it better about the stadium. Didn't go last week, and I'm sure it has its shortcomings (esp. the baseball infield - get the Marlins out of there already!!!), but it's really something we all need to embrace instead of bitch about. It'll be a lot better for everyone if we do.
