41-23 : U got Wrecked...
Not exactly the way the coaches drew it up.Georgia Tech steamrolled No. 23 Miami on Thursday night, 41-23. After five straight weeks where the Canes seemed to get lucky bounces and eked out close games, it was the complete opposite this chilly night in Atlanta.
The Yellow Jackets smacked the Canes up to the tune of 472 yards on the ground - the second most a Miami team has ever given up. GT put up 518 total yards in the end.
Paul Johnson's triple option took it to Miami all night. The Canes could do nothing to slow the attack. Jonathan Dwyer and Roddy Jones carried 17 total times for a combined 225 yards. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt only attempted six passes, but used his wheels to amass 93 on the ground. Even fullback Lucas Cox took it to Miami's rushing D, carrying eight times for 78 yards.
Randy Shannon and staff stressed that the triple option was all about assignments. Players would have to be in position, stick to their man, force turnovers and wrap up.
Miami did none of the above.
The defense looked lost the entire game. Misdirection had the Canes' front seven out of place and zigging when they needed to zag. Godforbid Miami found the backfield and had a shot at stuffing the opposition, players failed to wrap up. On occasion two or three defenders had a shot at a Tech running back, whiffed and turned a two-yard loss into a forty-yard gain.
It simply was one of those nights. Nothing good came from it and everyone is best suited getting this one out of their minds immediately. One game remains and The U needs to win out and end this thing a respectable 8-4 going into bowl season.
A few weeks back the Jackets put up 423 total yards in a28-7 losing effort at North Carolina. 326 yards on the ground, but three turnovers kept them off the board. Tonight, a clean game as Georgia Tech protected the football and forced Miami into boneheaded mistakes.
After a 3-0 first quarter, Georgia Tech made it 10-0 after a Michael Johnson 26-yard interception return for score. It was the 6'7" senior defensive end's first career pick as he housed an errant Robert Marve pass on 3rd and 3.
Marve was an ineffective 10-of-20 on the night for 121 yards, 1 touchdown and the interception. Jacory Harris fared a little better, going 13-0f-18 for 162 yards, two scores and a pick even more detrimental than Marve's.
Up 10-0 early in the second, Harris replaced Marve at the Georgia Tech 33-yard line after Miami recovered an onside kick attempt. After two straight runs by Javarris James for 12 yards, Harris forced his first pass of the night into the arms of Rashaad Reid, at the Tech nine.
The turnover cost Miami a scoring opp, but Tech would punt five plays later. On the ensuing drive, the Canes dinked and dunked their way down the field and the offense continued playing confused. Matt Bosher drilled the 24-yard field goal after Miami failed to convert a 3rd and Goal from the seven-yard line.
10-3 was as close as Miami could keep it. After a 26-yard kick return, Tech rumbled for a 58-yard score on their next play from scrimmage. Any bit of prosperity for the Canes was instantly met with utter disaster.
After a five-game run, Miami's streak came to a crashing halt. An ACC title game isn't mathematically out of reach, but tonight the Canes showed they're not ready for prime time. A recent run with wins over Wake Forest, Virginia and Virginia Tech gave Hurricane Nation hope, but it was false.
As thrilling as the last five wins were, they were ugly and barely effective more than they were thrilling and dominating. A few lucky bounces saved the Canes against the Hokies. Two missed field goals, a 95-yard drive, a stripped ball, missed field goal, touchdown and another strip were needed for Miami to steal one at Virginia. Against Wake, a few clutch catches down the stretch helped the Canes stave off the Deacs, 16-10.
The few time Miami has lit up the scoreboard this season, the defense still gave up points - 23 to Texas A&M, 41 to Florida State and 31 at Duke.
Bill Young failed to get it done tonight. If he had a game play to stop the triple option, calling it ineffective is a gross understatement. Had Miami defenders followed their assignments and wrapped up, they'd have made their coordinator look smarter. Instead, an outing where the Canes looked like they'd never even seen film of Johnson's quirky offense.
A few times this season I said this young team would pull out some miracle wins, playing beyond their years - but that there would also be some head-scratching moments and some backsliding. Tonight proved the latter.
Five straight wins, a 7-3 record and being ranked for the first time in two years can cover up glaring problems. It's hard to be critical of this team when they're finding a way and are getting the job done, but the minute they hit that buzzsaw and play a game like tonight, it's fair game to question what happened. Peel it back a few layers and address why eleven games into the season there are still so many issues.
Patrick Nix has been criticized all year for Miami not having any identity on offense. He's gotten a partial pass being this is a young squad with two first-year quarterbacks, but at this point of the season the offense should be further along. There's no excuse for the conservative nature and lack of ingenuity. The Canes are running a Tecmo Bowl-like offense, choosing from a grab bag of plays. Bubble screen. Short passes behind the yardage marker on third down. Runs up the middle. Designed scampers with the quarterback.
Nix's offense has looked solid on opening drives or down the stretch when he takes the training wheels off and Miami plays from behind, looking to score. We saw it against North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia. New, successful plays coming out late that would've been beneficial in the middle quarters.
Miami's O again looks basic. The running game is non-existent and the passing game lacks any real rhyme or reason. A speed back like Graig Cooper again in the game for short-yard, third down or goal line situations. James in the game as a blocker, instead of as the bruising back he should be. The supposed 'thunder and lightning' duo carried 17 times for a total of 74 yards and no touchdowns.
Lining up in the shotgun on 4th and a foot and throwing incomplete, instead of a well-designed play where it's not feast or famine regarding picking up a first down. Another outing where a 3 of 13 performance was the result as far as third down conversions were concerned.
I saw a stat today that Miami has run over 500 plays this season and only one has gone longer than 50 yards. With all that team speed? C'mon now.
At quarterback, some weeks there looks to be growth and a game later both Marve and Harris are playing like the freshman they are. That shouldn't be the case eleven games into their careers. What is Nix doing to develop this talented duo, molding them into the superstars of tomorrow?
Down the stretch, I initially felt 4-0 was a dream, 3-1 was good, 2-2 would be acceptable and 1-3 disastrous. With NC State left on the docket, Miami has a legit shot at 3-1 and an 8-4 regular season. Siting at 2-3, that sounds stellar - but at 7-3 with two to play, greed kicks in and you want it all.
Georgia Tech was the better team tonight, with 'team' being the operative word. Miami's D is as solid as its weakest link and tonight that was a pair of upperclassmen linebackers out of position and not playing fundamental football.
Romeo Davis and Glenn Cook helped kill the Canes tonight. Two seniors who have battled injuries and have had up and down careers, both looked mortal tonight. Out of place. Not wrapping up. Davis and Cook looked more like holdovers from the Coker era instead of the overachievers they've been in weeks past.
It's the epitome of this season. When playing to their potential and getting a handful of breaks, Miami is a few points better than your average ACC team. Catch the Canes off their game or in a funk and they'll get steamrolled by a good team with an effective, gimmicky offense.
You can shake your fist and remain disgusted with tonight's outcome, or you can take it in stride. This team has already done more than most thought they would in 2008. Freshman were playing beyond their years, upperclassmen stepped up their game on a few occasions and the Canes stole a few wins that could've gone either way. Be thankful for that instead of lamenting this most recent beat down.
Miami has one regular season game left and needs to wrap up 8-4, which sounds so much better than 7-5. Get that win, hope for some good ACC fortune and worst case, prepare for a bowl game - something that was no gimmie last year. Up next, more recruiting, more rebuilding and a better 2009.
It's not the outcome this fan base wanted, punch drunk from the past five weeks... but if you're honest with yourselves, you know this overall team isn't as good as its record and willed themselves to a few wins that could've just as easily have been losses. My logical side knew that and was scared of this game all year, though the emotion of the longest win streak since 2005 let me get ahead of myself.
At year's end, it then time for Shannon to reevaluate year two. Is he happy with the job he's doing? Is Nix the problem with this offense, or is it the youth itself? What about a 4-6 Jacksonville team that could wind up canning it's entire staff at season's end? Does that give Shannon another shot to lure his original first choice offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter down to Coral Gables?
As we know, rebuilding is no joke. An established, loaded, veteran Miami team doesn't get bowled over by the triple option. No way, no how. That said, these Canes aren't seasons vets. They're a mismatch of talented, yet inexperience newbies as well as some over the hill upperclassmen who never reached their overall potential.
Nine days until the final road trip of the season. Miami needs to lick its collective wounds, put this brutal loss in the rearview and concentrate on getting one last win. No more 'revenge' talk or reasons to hype themselves up. The Canes simply need a win. Forget drawing motivation from last year's 19-16 OT loss. This is 2008 and this season needs to end with a bang, not a whimper.
Regroup, get it together, land the "W" and see where things go from there.

I know that there are alot of fans out there who are in agreement with the 2 QB system that we are running, but Robert Marve is clearly digressing, as opposed to progressing! He looks scared and lost, he is relying too heavily on his legs (alot like Kyle Wright last season) and his throws are wild and inaccurate! Jacory Harris is clearly the more poised and relaxed QB! Harris should have been in the game in the 2nd half and everyone sees it but coach Shannon! Robert Marve has made some big plays for us this year, but he is not getting it done with his arm! Basically every big play that Marve has made this year is with his feet and not his arm! This game was terrible and this team should be ashamed right now! I know the season over all is a success, but how can you follow up a 5 game win streak and a national ranking, with a gutless, heartless and emotionless performance like this?
Good article, a bit rough on the kids this time around - as you point out, it was the "senior leadership" that failed in this one.
As far as the offense goes, I don't like to bash or "fire" the OC but, seriously, why are we in the shotgun so much? We certaining haven't run well out of it ALL SEASON....
And where is Baby J? Shouldn't he be the 1A to Coop's 1B? Beat 'em up in the middle, pound em, tire 'em, then let Coop runm wild...
AS an afterthought, the end result, possibly ending up with a matchup in the Gator with Notre Dame would be AWESOME!
I'll be in Raleigh next Saturday to watch the Kiddie Canes Go...
keeping the faith...
Look, I agree with you on pretty much everything you say. Randy is a good coach and this is a young team. However, I am just tired of hearing about Coker's kids and all about needing new talent. This may be true, but why is it every single team can go toe to toe with us every week. Teams that cannot possibly compete with the Canes talent, are finding ways to do it with solid coaching and planning. The real difference from last year is that we have gotten the lucky breaks. We haven't played one solid dominating game this year. And lets be honest, no one feels good because there is no considerable improvement, they have just been fortunate. If they had lost the first 6 and won the last six because of true improvement, I would be so much more optimistic. I am a patient guy, but Nix needs to go.
I would like to know how many years I have to sit and watch Miami defenders not wrap up the ball carrier. I see this year after year. This is something that players learn in high school football and yet fail to remember this key thing in college. I'm not putting all of the blame on the D, and I know that these are young kids but this offense needs a reboot as well. This is not the same Robert Marve that I was very impressed with early in the season. But...I still love my Canes and will continue to watch every game for as long as I live.
The way you start building for next year is by getting your QB situation settled. Start Jacory for the next two games and see how the offense moves the ball better. Coasch Shannon has to realize that team responds better to him. Marve is regressing ala Kyle Wright and that is hampering the progress of this team
So disappointed!!! But I know my disappointment is self inflicted, as I too got ahead of myself. Like I've previously stated, this game was my circle the calendar, measuring stick game from the start of the year. I kind of expected another loss, but a much closer battle. I say loss because the minute I saw a 23 ranking, I was like oh no. Don't believe the hype youngsters. Continue to over achieve and play hungry. Us against the world!
But no, Gtech brought us all back down to reality. We're a decent (much improved over last season) and by no means a good team. We just managed to get some lucky breaks against good teams, as we fielded over achieving freshmen. We're on our way back and no where near the 23rd ranked team in the country.
With the season 90% complete, I think it's near evaluation time. Two things:
1) As a Marve fan, it's hard for me to admit this. But I think we have a QB for '09 and his name is Jacory Harris. I base this on the entire season to date, not just the Gtech game.
2) I doubt it will happen, but Nix has to go. He has proven to be a conservative and mediocre at best OC throughout the entire season. I don’t care if we get 400yds against NC State and a bowl opponent. It would just prove my point. Now that we’re playing from behind so to speak, he will be, let me open up the damn offense. The words Mediocre and the Miami Hurricanes don’t go well in the same sentence. Shannon should know this. Hopefully when he reflects on the ’08 season he will realize a change is needed.
So now that I’m grounded again and my beginning of the year prediction of 7-5 is a distinct possibility, I certainly hope the Baby Canes prove me wrong. Go Canes, regain the focus you once had and go beat NC State.
One parting shot, Romeo Davis, Glenn Cook and Anthony Reddick, graduate and get the $uck out of here already.
I watched Paul Johnson at Navy and could never understand why no big program in a BCS league would not hire him. This offense even with good defensive talent is difficult to stop. When you are handicapped by the Cook's and Davis' of the world it's impossible. Ask FSU, even ask VT who barely slowed it up and lucked into a win earlier this year.
The scary thing is that PJ doesn't have the personnel to run this offense yet at Tech. When they do, look out nation.
Honestly, this was coming and I am still very proud of what this team did this year. Seven wins with this bunch? That's remarkable: some of us thought three or four is realistic. Shannon has done well, and Nix game plans differently for each game. I have my complaints about a lack of identity or power running game, but I think it may simply be a case of our OLINE not being of a high enough standard. This having been said the 4th and inches from the shotgun was shocking and disgusting. Nix gets one more year in my eyes. Young? I'm not sure what to say because this defense has a problem with running QBs. I have news for everyone: Russell Wilson who the Canes will face next week is BETTER than any dual threat QB we've faced this year. So he better make the adjustments this week or the dream of playing the enemy aka Notre Dame in a bowl game after 18 years of the rivalry being dormant will not come to pass.
I'll probably be chastised for saying this, but Nix can't go. One of the biggest problems we had with Berlin, Wright and Freeman (besides that they aren't great QBs) is that they practically had a different OC each season. When Rich Olson was here we were begging Coker to let him go thinking he was a cancer. Erickson picks him up at ASU and suddenly their offense is one of the most productive in the nation.
Nix proved himself at GT...their offense killed us. Give him some time to develop these QBs. I know it's been 11 games in, but we're talking about 2 freshman here. Expect that next year he'll open things up, we'll find our identity and things will start to click.
If not...then I'm a dumbass and fire the bastard.
defense played like $h!t, but CORY HAS TO START!!!
I will not be concerned if Jacory does not start the rest of this season, but I will be very concerned if he is not the starter next year. His pick was not his fault. It was the fault of Byrd, who did not come back on the play. Furthermore, I am not sure how you came to the conclusion that his pick was worse than Marve's pick 6.
Furthermore, I am not sure how you came to the conclusion that his pick was worse than Marve's pick 6.
Eddie, I thought it was worse for a few reasons. (1) We've come to expect better from Jacory. (2) The Marve pick was already in the books and Miami just got a gift regarding a failed onside kick opportunity.
Down 10-0, Miami gets the ball at the GT 33. James rushes twice and it's 1st-and-10 from the GT 21. Harris' first pass of the game is then intercepted and all momentum was gone.
Miami needed 7 there to stay in the game and that was their best scoring opp. Marve's pick was a fluke play by a defensive lineman, but the Canes were nowhere near scoring position.
10-7 and it's a different ballgame.
Harris looked the better quarterback last night and Marve looks like he's degressing. I'll readily admit that. I'm just saying that with an opportunity to put the game on his shoulders, Harris coughed up a big one that should've resulted in points.
Whos Dirk Koetter and is he good? Cause at this point, I don't hate Nix, I just dont think he is the right person for this job.. AllCanes lemme get some feed back
Whos Dirk Koetter and is he good? Cause at this point, I don't hate Nix, I just dont think he is the right person for this job.. AllCanes lemme get some feed back
Koetter was the Arizona State head coach before Erickson. Formerly a Boise State guy, he got the ASU gig for his offensive mind. That said, a terrible head coach.
He was canned in 2006 and was Miami's OC in waiting. It was announced during the Blue Turf Bowl as a 'done deal'.
He was Randy's first choice and when he was in Miami ready to sign a deal, Jack Del Rio and the Jags called. He trekked up to Jacksonville, was offered a better deal and signed on up there.
With the Jags at 4-6, that whole staff could see an overhaul and hopefully Koetter would be let go and would get a shot at coming down to Miami to do what Randy wanted him to do two years ago.
We'll see. A long shot, but the Jags are tanking and Nix isn't getting any better. Could be a reality.
Has Shannon learned that it is time to FREE JACORY yet?
http://www.neighborhoodies.com/free-jacory-tshirt-hoodie-p-1048.html
I'm wearing that to the spring game next year in case he hasn't figured it out yet.
NIX HAS TO GO!!!
There are certain things I can forgive with a team, knowing how young and inexperienced we are. However, there are certain things in football that should be a given.
I've been patient with Nix, content as he's opened up the playbook as he sees his players grow.
NOTHING, however, excuses going into shotgun on a 4th and 1. And he did it TWICE. A fundamental principle of offensive football is to keep the Defense guessing. You MUST at least threaten to QB sneak or run the ball by going under center. If you really must pass, then do it off play action.
To me, this signals that he cannot manage a game. This has NOTHING to do with youth, or reps, and falls squarely on his shoulders.
Also, his apparent refusal to run with James on short yardage / goalline situations boggles the mind. EVERY time we're in deep (except our TD vs VaTech last week; my case in point) we hand it to Coop. Nothing against Coop, but he's not built to get the short yards.
What I also fail to read in anyone's assessment on any blog, is that our O-Line is BAD. No offense can be productive when your RB is dodging 1-2 players and fighting just to get to the line of scrimmage. Same goes for passing--Marve reminded me of Kyle Wright yesterday, running for his life every other play. Until our Oline improves, our offense will be anemic
Overall still a geat season compared to last few years.
very dissapointing loss, but it's over
Several questions.
1.Our kick offs seem to be consistently short. Shouldn't a college kicker be able to get the ball in the end zone at least half the time?
2.Where is the run game?
We always seem to be in the shotgun with at best one back on obvious short yardage makeable plays and opt to pass when we just need 1 to 3 yards.
3. Why not start Jacory. He is obviously more comfortable and appears to be the more productive quaterback
I think Nix deserves one more year before any judgement. If we could develop a more effective run game things would look alot better. That issue goes beyond playcalling and has alot to do with offensive line quality/experience.
No question we have a great head coach, great defensive coordinator and assistants that understand and believe in the process.
The offense always takes longer and Nix deserves more time. Its hard to be patient especially after last night,it's a lesson hopefully learned. Still an incredibly young team as evidenced by last nights performance on both sides of the ball.
I'm not one to take forum posts and criticisms too seriously, but one point has been made repeatedly on several blogs, and it happens to be right: Lining up in shotgun on 4th and 1 or 3rd and 1 is inexcusable.
Anyone familiar with the game of football knows a main principle of any successful Offense is to keep the Defense guessing. You MUST line up under center in this situation if for no better reason than to at least threaten the run or QB sneak. If you must pass, so be it...but at least make the D make a choice. This is not lack of experience or reps or guts. This is Coaching 101, and Nix fails this test repeatedly.
I've been patient with Nix, and realize the limitations he has to work with, (youth, poor O-Line play) but his calls don't make the players' jobs any easier. Cooper up the middle near the goal line?? Seriously? Where is JJ? He might get that crucial yard.
Spread 5 WRs on a 2-point conversion, from the 2 yard line, with NO RB to even threaten a run?? Might as well just tell the D what we're doing. Another baffling error made repeatedly.
These errors in judgment potentially cost us momentum, points, or at the very least time for our D to rest on several drives. And it happens over and over.
It's getting harder and harder to convince myself that Nix is the man for the job.
The Tech game should have been competitive, instead the Canes layed down and quit. The Canes under Shannon will never reach their potential. He was a fall back hire and in my opinion is unqualified.Lay blame on the coordinators if you will, but ultimately the headcoach is responsible.Shannon's tenure will be remembered as one of the worst in Canes history.
This blog is one of the few sane sites out there. I've tried to peddle some reality over the net, but an objective view was dismissed in the froth of "swagger" & "the U is back."
Not a lot of bubbly right now. We won five straight, sure, but it was in spite of some glaring weaknesses, one being complete offensive ineptitude. Just spotty play & youth? Absolutely, & what's been abundantly stated here as play calling that is so appallingly weak-- especially when we're leading or barely behind. We sling when the game's out of reach either way, thus when the game is 10-0 like this one, we have no experience with that gear & lose our way. Nix hasn't opened it up when it mattered, & I think the "implementing half a play book" noise is an unnecessary hurdle, because everyone we play is well aware that Miami is using half a playbook. If he can't coach these kids into better schemes by this point in the season, he can't coach these kids.
472? The defense just looked ignorant of who the opponent was. We all knew what this offense was about: run, run, run. A simple check of statistics could have told you that. A shred of game film would have showcased the triple option. You couldn't have missed it. Apparently the players & the staff did precisely that, & were fully unaware of what team were they playing. Hence, we got punched in the mouth many times over. "Hope for turnovers" isn't a defensive strategy.
No more swagger talk. Play football, every game, every play, despite what Erin Andrews' vast football archive might lead you to believe. Nix it.
Good points, 305. I think AJ should have made a play on the J Harris pick, & disagree merely on which was bigger. They both sucked, but Marve's was only his fault. Kid throws every other ball high. Not that one.
Made me sick. At least The Office was funny.
& the fUNC Heels are losing.
What I also fail to read in anyone's assessment on any blog, is that our O-Line is BAD. No offense can be productive when your RB is dodging 1-2 players and fighting just to get to the line of scrimmage.
Agree. The line is horrible and even more frustrating, it seems guys on the line are upperclassmen who do the most talking game week. I've personally heard enough from Fox, Trump, Youngblood, etc. A lot of big talk about the team coming to play and then them not doing their job. Very maddening. Fox lost me last year at OU when he damn near guaranteed a victory. Shut up and play.
Good points, 305. I think AJ should have made a play on the J Harris pick, & disagree merely on which was bigger. They both sucked, but Marve's was only his fault. Kid throws every other ball high. Not that one.
Both picks were equally as bad. I'll take back my statement that Harris' was worse. One gave away 7 points and the other, a shot at scoring 7.
Byrd definitely didn't come back to help Harris and with Marve's it was a fluke that the DL even held onto it. 9 of 10 times, the lineman bats the ball down and can't reel it in.
Either way, Marve is digressing big time and Harris looks like the better player right now. for sure.
What has to happen for us to make the acc championhip game?
What has to happen for us to make the acc championhip game?
A lot.
Beat NC State.
Hope North Carolina loses to either NC State or Duke.
Hope Virginia wins out, beating Clemson today and Virginia Tech next week.
In other words, don't book your ticket for Tampa just yet.
So i take it that we have no shot at the ACC championship game now...
So i take it that we have no shot at the ACC championship game now...
Zilch.
Worry about NC State, 8-4 and a shot at the Gator Bowl.
So i take it that we have no shot at the ACC championship game now...
Zilch.
Worry about NC State, 8-4 and a shot at the Gator Bowl.
For me, losing out on the ACC championship game is not the disappointing aspect of this game. I could accept and be proud if we lost a hard fought battle, if our players represented well and our coaching staff did all they could.
What hurts is the way we lost. Eleven games into this season, and our offense was confused and inconsistent. Our defense looked tired and unprepared. Nix looked lost and flustered. He seems to have no idea what to do sometimes. Where's the progress, the comfort level, the evidence of practice and coaching? Why aren't we giving the ball to JJ more? One could go on and on.
I am a big Shannon supporter, but it irks me that he doesn't blame himself & the coaches a little more (at least publicly) when asked want went wrong--the problem is always "youth and inexperience". Baloney. Plenty of teams find success with 1st and second year players, when they are coached well. (Look at Bradford at OK, as an example, who killed us as a freshman last year).
This game reminded me of the LSU game, not only in terms of score but how we seemed to give up (Players AND coaches). It also was the first time since that LSU game that I almost turned the TV off, I was so disgusted.
I am curious to see if Shannon keeps Nix around after this season.
Here's a long shot... what about tommy tuberville at AUBURN? UM grad and last i checked he wasn't sittin too good there at AUBURN anyway i think randy should at least call up tommy and see what he's got to say. If not him what about tyrone willingham? anybody but nix!!!
I don't understand how Virginia winning out is any different then V.T. winning out? The Canes beat both of those teams. If V.T. wins out they would still have an identical division record to the Canes (considering they win out) and if Virginia would've won out it would be the same scenario.
Not to mention that overall (considering that GTech would lose to UGA) they would all have identical overall records.
How is a three-way tie between the Canes, V.T. and GTech go to V.T.? Or in the other case how would that tie goto the Canes if it came down to them, GTech and UVA? It doesn't make any sense to me at all unless one of the three were a) ranked and b) ranked higher then the other two. Isn't that the way the Big East used to do it?
I for one, think that Nix should be canned. He does not know how to use Coop and JJ at all. He does not know how to keep the other defenses guessing and for a lack of a better word, he completely sucks at play calling.
The only times we see light and those chains come off, is when the game is well out of reach.
(ALA fsu, unc, gtech)
We see the same damn plays over and over and over again with no progression coming week after week
305 your comment was perfect. It's like we are seeing a playbook straight out of TECMO bowl
its extremely pathetic when you have a team full of studs.
GET NIX THE HELL OUT OF HERE
Well this game sucked and we couldn't make a play on either side of the ball. This was a lesson in how NOT to tackle for sure. The offense was yet again, nonexistent. I thought Harris should have played more, as he seemed to be more effective overall. I say save this gametape for the summer to scheme for Tech next year, but other than that, the tape is pretty worthless as nobody runs anything close to it. Very disappointing but overall we're still 7-4 with achance at 8-4 against a very game NC State team. Don't sleep on the Pack. I watched the game against UNC, and they were pretty impressive against a team we lost to at home. We have to come ready to play discliplined football. 8-4 would be a hell of a year, especially after being 2-3 at one point.
I agree that Shannon should evaluate things after the season, and see what he needs to do. If he can get Keotter, I say go for it. He coached in the Pac Ten and we need that passing game injected into this stagnant team. If Nix stays, then he needs to be forced to go out this summer and get some new ideas from other coordniators who play a simlar type of offense: USC, UCLA, Arkanas (Petrino), etc. We just need some ideas.

I want to apologize to the 'Cane nation.....I now live in No. Ga. via So. Miami and have gone to the GT/Miami games here and the OB final game. Cost me some good money. But I think I'm a jinx.....so no more live games for this kid, tv will have to do. Maybe then we can get back to our winning ways !!! It was cold too...
big pimpin
with marve 7-5

RS PLEASE LET HARRIS LOOSE!!!
One more question I have to ask...Inside the 2, why don't our defensive linemen line up closer together and not have such wide splits. That makes no sense to me. All the QB had to do was dive behind the one block on the tackle. We did the same damn thing in the Fiesta Bowl. I didn't understand it then and I don't now. Don't sleep on NC State. We have to play a good game to beat them.

UM needs to beat NcSt. You don't want to lose 2 times in a row against NcSt. Thats just embarrassing. Take care of business and move on.
305,
The general consensus seems to be that a win Saturday will put us in the Champs Sports Bowl and a loss puts us in the "Nut" Bowl (Emerald Bowl). Do you think those are the most likely destinations for our post season play? Personally, I'll take sunny Orlando over cold, windy, rainy and foggy San Francisco!!
"Whos Dirk Koetter and is he good? Cause at this point, I don't hate Nix, I just dont think he is the right person for this job.. AllCanes lemme get some feed back"
Here's another interesting option for OC, besides Dirk Koetter. Man, I really hate that word "option" right now.
Stan Parrish (Ball State): Offensive coordinator Stan Parrish has assembled a very balanced offensive attack that is among the nation’s leaders in total offense, scoring offense, turnovers lost, 3rd down efficiency. Quarterback Nate Davis has led a very disciplined unit that seems to be in rhythm every single week. The Cardinals have a played to their strengths throughout the season by mixing a short passing game and play action passes. Davis is a candidate for numerous post season All-American and quarterback awards. The offense is one of the least penalized units in the country and the Cardinals have scored 33 touchdowns in 48 trips into the red zone. Parrish and the Ball State offensive staff have been recognized twice as Game Changing Coaches this season.
Stan Parrish: Game Changing Coach vs. Indiana
Stan Parrish: Game Changing Coach vs. Northern Illinois
Key stats:
26th nationally - Rushing offense (194 yards per game)
20th nationally - Passing offense (264 yards per game)
11th nationally - Total offense (458 yards per game)
11th nationally - Scoring offense (38 points per game)
2nd nationally - Turnovers lost (8)
3rd nationally - 3rd down efficiency (50.5 %)
Ball St since 2003
2003 88th
2004 98th
2005 94th
2006 39th
2007 40th
2008 17th
Parrish took over in 2006. Since he took over they have shown TREMENDOUS improvement. This guy reminds me of Bill Young. He has been successful for a number of years and he is a little older.
More on Parrish:
After leaving Kansas State, Parrish served as an assistant head coach at Rutgers University from 1990-1995. For the following six years he coached at the University of Michigan, where he served as offensive coordinator in 2000 and 2001. As the quarterbacks coach he also worked with Brian Griese and Tom Brady at Michigan. Parrish helped the Wolverines to a 1997 berth in the Rose Bowl and the school’s 11th national championship. Parrish spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons as the quarterbacks coach of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2002, he tutored starting quarterback Brad Johnson, who led Tampa Bay to a 12-4 regular-season record and the first Super Bowl title in the franchise's history.
Parrish is 60 I believe but he seems to have been around the block similar to Young. Both were Coordinators at big time colleges in the past and then were last working at lesser schools but producing results. I really like the fact that he tutored some big time QB's. I think we really need someone than can develop marve/harris.
Just putting it out there Randy Shannon, you have to at least explore some options this off season.
Gamal - Stan Parrish has an impressive resume. Another tie, Ball State AD Tom Collins has UM ties and did some time at The U back in the 80s.
The only reason I personally keep bringing up Koetter is because of his interest in the gig back in 2006. If there's one thing we've seen it's a handful of guys that have now turned down Miami - either as head coach, OC or DC. Koetter wanted the gig and then JAX came calling with more money.
He's already in Florida and will most likely be out of a job in a few weeks. He liked Miami two years ago this time and hopefully he'll like the Canes again if the gig is offered. He had a relationship with Shannon (Randy visited ASU in the off-season years ago) and hopefully he buys into what the Canes are doing...
MagiCty305,
A 2 way tie goes to the head to head; unfortunately, a 3 way tie goes to the division record. In that case VT has only lost one division game (Miami), GT has lost 2 (UNC and VT) and Miami has lost 2 (GT and UNC); which means VT is heading to Tampa. I have no clue what happens in a 4 way tie, which could happen (VT,GT,UNC and Miami)! Either way it's not going to happen this year!
Disregard my previous comment about the 4 way tie, I forgot that UNC got worked by NC State!
VT has a better divisional record than Miami or GT. VT has one loss in the coastal, miami two, GT three. That's how three way ties are broken, just like the SEC divisions and Big 12 divisions.
Look at the stats:
Marve 8 TD's, 11 INT's, 53.2% Comp.
Harris 9 TD's, 4 INT's 60.9% Comp.
It's clear - Harris needs to start.
My take is this: I have seen little progression with the offense in the 2 years nix has been here. To be honest, he seems like he's calling the plays for Auburn this year. At some point, you have to take shots over 7-10 yards more than once a game to loosen up the D. You don't repeatedly run Cooper inside because he's not built for that over a season. Where's the TE in the passing game? They were always how we separated ourselves from the rest of the country. The past few years they have been under utilized. They could be handy with all the blitzes we have been facing lately aside from blocking. You can't get inside the red zone and just settle for 3, calling QB runs or runs straight off tackle for 3 plays and expect to get 7. Points are nice but touchdowns win games. Play to win and not to not lose. There's a difference. There are dynamic offense all over the place and there's no excuse not to have one at The U. 8-4 would be very nice after a 5-7 year, but looking at the big picture, to take that next step to be a real national player, the team and offense needs to evolve. We really need to win on Saturday against a good NC State team as well. Ending the regular season with a loss would really put a damper on a nice stepping stone season. If we can somehow get Koetter, get him. Nix can be co-offensive coordinator/QB coach or something.
