Miami 16, Virginia Tech 14

A five-game win streak for a young team sitting at 2-3 in early October. Raise your hand if you can honestly say you saw that coming.

Don't worry, you're not the only one.

The Miami Hurricanes' improbable roll continues. The latest victim, Virginia Tech. A former Big East foe with a two-game win streak in the series, the Hokies were another notch on the belt of these Baby Canes.

Another low-scoring defensive battle, where Miami again found a way to rise to the occasion. Dig a little deeper. Come together. Make a few more plays and most importantly, finish.

Randy Shannon has been preaching it all season and it's the reason the Canes are riding their longest win-streak since 2005. These freshman are learning the art of closing.

Against Duke, it was the arm and legs of Jacory Harris who put a once-close game out of reach. A week later, it's Robert Marve hooking up with Thearon Collier down for a much needed first down in the waning moments.

Against Virginia, a 95-yard drive in regulation to tie, a defensive strip, a shot at a game-winning field goal, a touchdown in overtime and another defensive strip to seal a fourth straight win.

This time around, it was Allen Bailey providing the signature moment. Down two, Tyrod Taylor was manhandled and thrown for a loss on a must-have 4th-and-3. Miami ran out the clock, pulled out a win and turned their attention to Georgia Tech; next Thursday's foe and the Canes most meaningful game since 2005.

Three years ago Miami was riding high after a 27-7 smackdown of Virginia Tech, rose to No. 3 in the polls and faceplanted a week later when and upset-minded GT squad came to the Orange Bowl and left with a 14-10 upset. The Canes were in the driver's seat, an ACC title game berth looked to be in the cards and at the most improbable moment, lost their mojo.

Two games later, a 40-3 loss against LSU in the Peach Bowl. The following year, an out of nowhere 7-6 season, an on the field brawl with Florida International, a four-game losing streak down the stretch, the firing of Larry Coker and an invite to a bowl game in Boise, complete with Smurf turf.

5-7 last year under Shannon, a top-flight recruiting class and a handful of hope entering year two - it all has a chance to come full circle next Thursday night, against the team that kicked off Miami's decline and a program that owns a three-game win streak over the Canes.

Whether Miami finds their way to Tampa or a BCS game, take solace that this program has turned the corner. Don't let that fact get lost if the Canes fail to pull off an unfathomable seven or eight game win streak down the stretch.

This team is overachieving. Freshman are playing wise beyond their years. Miami's quarterbacks are finally an asset instead of a liability. It isn't always pretty, but it's proving effective. Boneheaded mistakes will be part of the process, but they'll be worked out in time by both coaches and players.

Right now, the end result is what matters. Filter out the loser's mentality and rid of the dark cloud that's hovered over this program for three years. Win pretty. Win ugly. Win by the book or win an an unorthodox manner. Just win, Baby Canes.

Those criticizing the process instead of the result, you're missing out on something good. For the first time in years, it's a good time to be a Cane. The ride up is part of the process and after being dead in the water last season - the victories are overdue and welcome. Enjoy this part of the journey back.

Watching this team is like watching your kid grow. Losses are setback and it's part of the process. Mistakes can't be judged against what 'older brother' and more established programs are pulling off. There are growing pain when you field thirty-one freshman and rely on kids playing high school ball this time last year. The trip back to the top will be complete with its share of setbacks. We know that going into it.

You have two choices as a present day Cane. Enjoy the ride, or bitch about the view.

One group realizes the task at hand. The program was in horrible shape. A first-time head coach had to learn on the job, fire some coordinators along the way, settle for second and third-choice replacements and was starting from scratch, in an unforgiving city with a rich tradition and a university afraid to reach for it's wallet. Better men have failed, with more at their disposal.

That side of the fence hasn't lessened their expectations. They're being realistic regarding the parity in college football and the fact that a three year erosion of a program won't be restored overnight. As a result, they can enjoy the ride, the view and can focus on all the good things this team is doing.

Those on the other side, a miserable existence and constant bitch-fest. Head over to a Canes message board after a game and check out the impulsive rants and premature bashings players and coaches take, as early as the first drive of the game.

Three and out and it's time to fire Patrick Nix. Give up a first down on third-and-short and now it's Bill Young who needs to start updating his resume.

Marve throws an ill-advised pass and it's Harris time. Settle for three with the newbie in the game and it's time to go back to the redshirt freshman.

All before the first quarter even comes to a close.

Post-game, not a good word to say. Could've done this. Should've done that. Might've worked today, but will hurt down the road. Judging along the way, instead of looking at the final product and assessing after the fact. Hanging on every word of coachspeak as if it's gospel and judging every move made by the staff.

For all the grief Shannon's taken - be it the media or the fans - he's a few games from having his name right up there for Coach Of The Year honors. To turn around a heartless 5-7 squad that started this season 2-3; not bad for a second-year, first-time head coach.

Happy days are here again, for those who care to notice. Those with that 'title game or bust' mentality, living in yesteryear and comparing everything to 1987 or 2001... it'll be a long ride back for you. The present is now, if you open your eyes. Today's freshman are the upperclassmen of tomorrow that will take this team to the top.

The journey is supposed to be more fun that the arrival at the destination. Once a top, there's nowhere to go but down. Miami is on the fun side of the mountain right now. Enjoy this season. Root like hell these next two games.

Hope for the best and should the result be less than stellar, take solace this this thing is already way ahead of schedule.

Dominant times are just around the corner. Another storm is brewing in Coral Gables and it's getting to that point where even outsiders can acknowledge it.

7-3! 5 game win streak! Are you Kidding me? I am so happy about this new Miami squad. If this group of young Canes continues to grow and improve, the NCAA better hold on for a hell of a ride the next few years. Now UNC loses and we control our own destiny now! I kissed the ACC Championship goodbye after the FSU loss, and now its within our reach. More proof that I should never underestimate those Canes. Great to see the Cane defense step things up, I just can't wait until this offense gets things together and we see the "old" Canes that could just score at will against anybody. I just have one more thing to say...GO CANES!

So much talk is made about the Canes regaining the swagger of yesteryears and the dominance this program once had. While giving the team all the credit in the world for a hard fought win over VT, is it really possible to return to the "decade of dominance" like days with Patrick Nix at offensive coordinator?

My honest opinion is no. Put talented kids under a subpar coach and they may never reach their potential. I'm interested to see who else is fed up with Nix's ultraconservative play calling. Taking nothing away from our boys, Thursday's W could've easily been a L if our defense didn't stand strong every time they were called on. You've gotta put points on the board to win football games.

I'm tired of everyone making excuses for him. I've heard too many people beat around the proverbial bush this year blaming the Canes' injuries, youth, inexperience, etc. Ten games into the season, including close games against Wake, Virginia, and in-state rival UCF caused this team to mature ahead of schedule. In my view, there are no more excuses for Nix. This play-it-safe approach is going to come back and bite us like it almost did late Thursday night.

It's time for Patrick Nix to shit or get off the pot. Put some trust in your quarterbacks, make better use of your two running backs who may be the finest pair in the country (I won't even elaborate on my feelings of Baby J not being in the game when we're inside the 5), let the wideouts make some plays and open this offense up and put some points on the board.

Three drives from inside VT's 49 yard line, and no TDs to show for it. In my opinion, unacceptable at The U.

All bitching and moaning aside, great Win for our boys.

That win felt great! The D really stepped up, good to see the other QBs on their backs. I'm not complaining, but the offense had to settle for 6 points on two field goals that should've been 14. The field goals were engough, but we've got to capitilize on those drives where we are inside the 5. If I remember correctly, we had the same thing happen in the game against FSU (although I think a penalty pushed us back against FSU). Regardless, we've got to get TDs when we are that close. Speaking of penalties, that was another stat that looked good for us on Thursday - I don't remember any penalties, but the boxscore shows 1 for 10 yards against the Canes - much improved from the UVA game.

if we get a new OC and fire NIX then the offense has to learn a new system over and that may cause the offense to take a step back next year. Nix will get better after having the spring to come up with new plays. hes still learning like the players are. everybody complaining needs to CHILL, we dont need the negative energy now

I still cant believe that some ppl are still bashing Nix, Shannon, Young etc. I mean its getting to be a joke right about now. I don't even want to see any Canes message boards if they drop one, or both of these remaining games. Apparently just winning isn't good enough for some people, thats ridiculous. I, along with everyone else in the locker room will take an ugly ass win over a pretty loss ANY day and the rest of Cane nation should feel the same way. Im not saying we dont have work to do, we gotta take advantage we when get down in the RZ, but shut up with all the bashing until its needed, and within a 5 game win streak, its not needed.

For anyone who wasn't able to get down to Miami Gardens on Thursday, you missed something special. I have been a huge critic of the new stadium and a supporter of the OB, but when we stopped VT on 4th down, Dolphin Stadium felt like the OB. The atmosphere was so elecrtric that if someone would have lit a match, the place would have exploded!! It was only 3/4 full but the noise level would have matched The Swamp, Big House, Happy Valley, The Horseshoe or anywhere else for that manner. You could hear the "It's great to be a Miami Hurricane" chant from the time you left your seat until the time you got to your car!! It was incredible!! We win, UNC loses...that's called destiny baby!! We're coming Tampa!! Win Ugly!! Go Canes!!

That says it all. At this point, I'm done bitching (Nix) and simply enjoying the ride.

But it felt great to see a glimpse of what 'Cane Defense use to look like. The fact 18 year olds are doing it is mind blowing.

G-tech has been my 'circle the calendar' game from the start of the season. This game will be a statement game/win if we pull it off.

The hot hand QB rotation is still working. I was so worried they would force feed J Harris, but stuck with the hot hand for this game in Marve. But coaches, if JJ is 100%, it's time to use the hell out of him. We need power running.

Go Canes!!! I know I shouldn't be thinking it, but can you imagine playing FSU in the ACC championship. Sweet!!

Granted, looks like Maryland will represent the Atlantic. All conjecture at this point.

Just win Baby Canes, good / bad / or ugly. just win!!

I found something interesting.

Let's say everyone in the atlantic wins this weekend (except g. tech of course):

1 - Miami (5-2)
2 - UNC (4-3)
2 - Va. Tech (4-3)
2 - Virginia (4-3)

So after that - Virginia and Va. Tech play each other so one will lose.

Then worst case scenario we lose and UNC wins again:

1 - Miami (5-3)
1 - UNC (5-3)
1 - Va. Tech OR Virginia (5-3)

Three way tie goes to Atlantic standings:

1 - Miami (4-1)
1 - Va. Tech (4-1)
2 - UNC (3-2)

OR

1 - Miami (4-1)
2 - Virginia (3-2)
2 - UNC (3-2)

In the first scenario we hold the tie-breaker over Va. Tech.

ACC Bowl order:
Orange Bowl
Chick Fil-A
Gator
Champs Sports
Music City
Meineke
Emerald
Humanitarian
Congressional

Just win!!!

The main thing that I have preached all along was that once the players BELIEVED, then this thing would turn.

This just in,,,,,, THEY BELIEVE.

Regardless of where this trek ends, we needed to get to the place this season where the players could see that the coaches were right. That if they did what was being taught, then good things would eventually happen.

This defense, so young and so inexperienced up front, is starting to play. Coach Young has done a fantastic job bringing this unit along this season. If they can keep this improvement up and hold down the fort until this equally inexperienced offense can catch up, then we will be fine.

I mean,,, we are actually ADJUSTING at halftime on defense again. And it is working.

I refuse to bash Coach Nix. There is improvement on this side of the ball this season, but the total package will take longer than the one we are seeing defensively. As long as I see improvement, I am good.

Can they make up to see me in Tampa Town??? Who knows, but I damn sure am enjoying this metamorphosis.
