Game Five : Miami 48, Florida A&M 16

470 yards of total offense, 48 points, a 4-1 record and a No. 9 ranking in mid-October and all still isn't well in Canesville.

Some advice for logical-minded folk; stay off any UM-related sites during game. The commentary from this supposed fan base is enough to make you lose your mind.

Miami smacked up undefeated FAMU to the tune of 48-16 on Saturday night, shut down all-world punt returner LeRoy Vann and field a squad of second, third and fourth stringers the final two quarter, yet it's still not enough the morning after.

Was Jacory Harris razor-sharp all night? Of course not. 217 yards and two touchdowns were impressive, but the two interceptions were two too many - making for a 12 TD to 7 INT ratio five games into the season. That said, we're talking about a true sophomore who made his seventh career start this week. Give Harris time. He's learning on the job.

All that said, it was an impressive win in a pitfall game. FAMU rolled in upset-minded and was absolutely beat down in every phase of the game. It was no contest, regardless of how much the Rattlers tried to hype it up all week.

Regarding the Canes and a less-than-perfect outing; it is what it is. After four straight games against ranked opponents - two of which were nationally televised and one of two regionally shown Saturday night games - forgive Miami if there was a little rust when lowly FAMU rolled into town.

How do you get jacked up for Florida A&M on the heels of Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma? You don't. It's a glorified scrimmage that 47,859 fans showed up to witness.

Your starters knew before kickoff that they wouldn't see the second half and your back ups knew they'd see their first action of the season. Your scout team brought more thunder than your opponent and couldn't hold a candle to the last four teams on your schedule.

Miami held a 31-3 lead at the half before the first-teamers were sidelined - a rarity in the modern era of Miami Hurricanes football. Lest not forget this is a program that sweat out a 14-13 win against Houston a few years back; a team that barely had the depth to eke out a 20-15 win at Duke thanks to some FIU brawl-related suspensions.

The Canes finally get some back ups some meaningful playing time, the young talent looks solid and fans still find reason to bitch. Will wonders never cease.

For all those wasting time and energy this week regarding the future of redshirt freshman Tommy Streeter, nice work. While the gurus and know-it-alls who swore their father's cousin's nephew's former roommate told them Streeter was thinking of transferring, the wideout had three receptions for 55 yards - Miami's leading receiver Saturday night.

Streeter followed up his on the field performance with the following words for the Herald's Manny Navarro: "I'm 100 percent a Cane, 110 percent. I'm dedicated to this program and I'm not going anywhere. I'm just staying humble and waiting for my opportunity, my name to be called. I'm just trying to work hard, show coaches I can make plays and that they can trust in me."

Whether Streeter is in a Miami uniform in 2010 or not, why in the hell is this even a topic of conversation when the Canes are 4-1 and just re-cracked the top ten?

Thearon Collier returned a 61-yard punt for a touchdown and had a 28-yard reception. Kendal Thompkins hauled in his first pass of the season. A.J. Highsmith went 3-of-3 for 38 yards, taking his first snaps behind center. Brandon Harris picked off a pass. Travis Benjamin averaged 26 yards per punt return while FAMU's Vann had one return for 15 yards.

Fourth string running back Damien Berry carried 14 times for 162 yards and a touchdown - the most yards since Tyrone Moss rushed for 195 against North Carolina four years ago. When was the last time the Canes had the depth to turn to a fourth string tailback?

For all the questions surrounding the secondary earlier in the year, the unit is starting to come together. The past few weeks showed the emergence of Ray Ray Armstrong at safety and against FAMU it was freshman defensive back Brandon McGee who got some minutes and made some plays. Same to be said for the offensive line, which broke in youngsters like Brandon Washington and Ben Jones.

These present-day Canes are 4-1, ranked No. 9 and are on a roll... while the Canes of tomorrow are getting broken in nicely, instead of being thrown into the fire, which has been the norm the past few seasons.

It was only FAMU and it wasn't a razor-sharp performance, but it wasn't supposed to be. Miami passed yet another test early in the season; avoiding the let down. The starters took care of business, the back ups got their licks in and the Canes are headed to Orlando next weekend for a showdown with Central Florida.

All is good in Canesville; even if the message board folk disagree.

Another great writeup 305.

I swear tho, im afraid im going to end up choking the next 'Cane "fan" that trashes this team. Im almost scared to head to the Shark when we play Clemson due to the fact this fan base is acting like bunch of damn morons.

305, I feel the same.

I made the mistake of heading over to Canestime during the game. Holy hell. I couldn't believe the things people were saying. Watching the game and literally complaining play by play. The coaches. The play calling. Jacory's picks. It's like they derive zero pleasure out of following this team. I don't get it.

Anonymous - There is a sense of entitlement with this fan base that I simply don't understand.

It's not 1987. There's much more parity in the college game and a season isn't a failure if you lose more than two games. It's no longer a "national championship or bust" era of college football.

58-home game win streaks are gone. So are three national championships a decade and a half dozen cracks at a title in a ten-year span.

This fan base needs to stop measuring up this current team with the ghosts of Miami past. We'll never see 2001 again. It's over. Different era.

Miami is 4-1 and No. 9 in the land year three into Shannon's rebuilding project. Why that can't fire some people up, I simply cannot fathom....

Do you ever get tired of writing with contempt about the fan base - the same fans that buy your employer's products?

Message boards usually bring out the most rabid, those who practice emotion over logic.

You often ask the fans to keep things in perspective, and now I ask you to do the same.

this "supposed fan" crap is old.. and for 12 year olds.. give it a rest..

people who are blind to the flaws are not better fans than people who want us to be better than what we showed.. people have different opinions, and they are entitled to them.

Don't mix apples and oranges regarding those who buy product and what not.

I'm talking about a small percentage of the fan base that remains unfulfilled no matter what state the program is in.

The only thing I get "tired" of are fans who remain miserable even when this team is 4-1 and ranked No. 9 in the country.

Regarding "Anonymous", there is a middle ground between what you speak of. You don't want the blind optimism and the folks who were calling for undefeated seasons and national championships the last three years.. but you also don't want the mindset that anything less than a national championship is unacceptable.

There's a "nothing is good enough" mindset amongst this fan base at times which gets very frustrating. As someone who takes the time to cover the Canes, I'm going to make reference to that. Sorry if you disagree.

... and as for my 'supposed fan' crap, I'm using that in a different light than the rah-rah folk who claim you're not a real fan if you didn't go to the school, if you don't go to every game, if you don't blindly defend the program at every turn.

I call these people 'supposed fans' because I fail to see where they take any enjoyment from following this team. "Fan" is short for "fanatic" and these people I speak of are nothing more than jaded critics.

I sat in section 145 for the OU game and had a row of clowns behind me who bitched about EVERY freakin play. They bitched about every call. They trashed Shannon every five seconds.

One guy was screaming so much about the misuse of timeouts, he didn't even realize that Miami was given their second timeout back (midway through the second half). When I turned around to explain what happened, he then started bitching about the end of the Cal game -- WHILE we're watching Miami hold a lead against OU.

C'mon now.

Some of these people aren't fans. They go to game to do nothing more than vent their frustrations and let off steam. The didn't take one ounce of joy in watching the contest.

Oh yeah, another idiot... some old man a few row back who went on a tirade because Miami didn't try a hail mary before the half.

:02 seconds left on the clock, trailing 10-7 and in a game where the offense sputtered, the quarterback already threw two picks and this clown wants a hail mary instead of just kneeling it out and regrouping.

Classic.

I'm taking a game-by-game approach here. We aren't good enough to already plan on being in the Fiesta Bowl as ESPN has projected right now. That thinking has gotten us burnt in past years. We have to take each opponent as they come.

That being said, I was happy about the amount of playing time many back-ups were able to get. The play that stands out in my mind was the long run by Berry, and seeing Ben Jones springting 30 or 40 yards downfield with him looking for someone to block. Now THAT was a beautiful thing to see. Even though it was FAMU, that real game experience is vital. AJ may have only thrown three passes but even getting snaps in a real game is important. Maybe since he had the drop on the exchange there might help prevent a drop against a better opponent if he's called on at a different time.

I hope based on some of these performances that some of these guys start to see the field, such as Berry. When your number is called you have to be ready to go and some of these guys looked pretty good.

Was I happy with the play of the first team? No. But as Chris said, after the gaunlet we just had, it's easy to have a mental letdown against FAMU. We all want perfection, as they do but they do their best. Enjoy the 4-1, and focus on ECF on the road. One thing I will add is that it's great to have seen the first 4 of Miami's games on national tv again. I think this week they're on CBS nationally so I'm in Heaven up here. Go Canes!

I think this game showcased the true depth that Miami has started to stockpile. The running backs and receivers are very talented all the way down the roster. I still haven't seen enough of Highsmith to determine his potential. However, I can't wait to see the next game.I hope for continued growth and improvement in this young team. Bring on the Golden Knights!!

Some of you just don't get it. Canes is dead on with his assessment.

Miami is notorious for having a piss poor, ungrateful fan base. It's been that way forever and it'll always be that way. Nothing is good enough.

I'm a long-time allCanes (All Sports) customer and I think it's bogus that anyone would take a shot at Chris regarding voicing his opinion here, somehow tying it to customer loyalty.

For all of you chest thumping about being customers, easy to say when the team is 4-1. Where were you the past three years when the Canes were in the toilet?

Many times I was in that store the past few seasons and it was dead. These days the line is again wrapped around the corner hours before kickoff.

Let's not tout ourselves as super fans for supporting a team that's ranked #9 in the country.

Count me as one who enjoyed watching some of our younger players get a chance to show what they have to offer. Unlike some other coaches in this state, Randy saw no reason to pour it on FAMU and a bunch of kids who probably played with(in HS) and are friends with a lot of our players.

Watching some of these youngsters and knowing they are only going to get better is very encouraging. Randy knows better than to leave his star players in and take a chance on getting one of them hurt (unlike some other coaches I could mention). Besides, it's just smart to give these kids some playing experience in case they get banged up.

I am with you all canes! The only thing I would of liked to see is AJ being allowed to throw a fade to Streeter or Bryd down in the red zone! Would of been nice for AJ to throw 8 to 10 passes!

We are getting back to old school style of UM football. Any objective fan can see that!

10-2 looks very realistic this year! What an improvement that would be from last year's 7-5!

John, Miami/UCF isn't a CBS National game. It'll be on the CBS Classic-type cable channel. Their equivalent of ESPN Classic, where they usually run old games.

Check your local cable provider to make sure you'll get the game.

Look what is going on in Trailerhassee! We should be dancing in the streets right now! The Seminoles might not win a game the rest of the year and we are complaining at 4-1 when ranked #9? If we keep our heads on straight we will be in a BCS game!

Is the game not on T.V. for most people here in the local market?

Hurricanesports.com lists the game as being on "CBS College Sports". Does anyone know what the equivalent Direct TV channel is? I thought it was just going to be on channel 4, CBS. It will really, really stink if we don't get to watch this game. I don't understand why local college teams don't have their games televised always when they play away. It should be more like the NFL in that respect - if your home team is playing an away game, and you are in the home market, you should get the game on TV.

Any help from your Cane fans out there in cyber space would be much appreciated! Go Canes!

Can't wait to see them live this year. Thanks....

And lastly, here is info for Comcast customers who want to watch the Canes this weekend:

"Comcast Network announced late Wednesday afternoon it will provide a free preview of CBS College Sports in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and the Florida Keys, allowing for Saturday's game between ninth-ranked UM and UCF to be seen locally.

The game will be available on Comcast channel 744.

If not for the deal, the 900,000 homes in South Florida that subscribe to the cable service wouldn't have been able to see the game. The Dish Network (channel 152) and DirectTV (channel 613) carry the CBS College Sports channel, but Comcast does not locally.

The game is also being made available to watch online through hurricanesports.cstv.com at a pay per view rate of $14.95 for standard definition and $19.95 for high definition.

Here is how the game will be made available statewide...

I was fortunate enough to get to attend the FSU/UM game in Tally this year and the two gentlemen behind me acted as if they were more qualified to call the plays than Mark Whipple.

I understand play calling errors occur, hell, even the mighty Urban Meyer fudges up certain situational calls but give me a break. I almost had to watch the game from behind the FSU band because the comments these 'Cane fans were making were absurd.

Bottom line, that's what your going to get with any fan base. Your going to get the fans who have played or experienced the game who watch it with a level head and love just getting chance to watch your team compete (me) and then you get the never-was/has-been who won't even be here if Miami were to ever slip back down to mediocrity and need a rebuilding year.

Enjoy the ride... stop critiquing every little action. And if you really are that better, I am sure someone can point you in the direction of the Miami AD and you can discuss possibly taking over the team...
